Brake tips

Check your brakes: Brake pads and discs can wear out quickly so need to be checked regularly, ideally every six months, and before any long car journeys.

Signs of wear: There are also visual clues, including an increased amount of brake dust on your car wheels, ridging or cracking in the brake pads and discs, or the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) light illuminated on the dashboard.

Listen carefully: You should be able to hear when brake pads or discs need changing. Worn down pads can cause a squeaking noise when you apply the brakes, while a grinding or clicking noise may indicate that a worn pad is making contact with the brake disc.

Gauge the pressure: A lack of pressure or ‘soft’ feeling on the brake pedal is usually caused by old or insufficient brake fluid. Brake fluid should be replaced regularly - check your owner manual to find out which type is suitable for your vehicle.
